Front Street Series
Metal Sculptures & Wall ReliefsKevin Barrett's Front Street Series is based on the artist's new work at his studio in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, the waterfront area between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges traditionally inhabited by generations of iron workers and craftsmen. Barrett has influenced by the blending in this neighborhood of seemingly disparate populations - a result of the recent influx of musicians, writers, painters and sculptors. Barrett's Front Street Series reflects the area's reemergence as one of New York's most thriving communities of artists and artisans.
At thirty-eight, Barrett's success in abstract, welded aluminum sculptures and painted wall reliefs is well documented. His works have been shown throughout the United States and in Europe and can be found both in public and private collections. Barrett's sculpture inherits many characteristics of a long modern art tradition of metal constructions, including geometric, hard edges. However, his interest in and use of color to enhance the three-dimensional forms in his work successfully unites and reflects a unique blend of sculpture and painting, giving his work additional depth. And, though Barrett's work traditionally has been defined by it's light, color, and optimism, the artist's inclusion of more fluid, organic shapes in his Front Street Series creates an energy and movement that brings and emotional content and warmth to the inherent strength and durability of his chosen medium.
